Ever since his passing in 1993, many fans have paid visits to the grave of Wong Ka Kui (黄家驹), the late frontman of the legendary Hong Kong band Beyond, to pay their respects. However, two men’s recent visit has led to outrage from the entire country and the Beyond fan community.

On 19th May (Sunday), a video surfaced on social media showing a young male visiting Wong Ka Kui’s grave at the Tseung Kwan O Chinese Permanent Cemetery in Hong Kong. However, rather than paying respects, the male began vandalising the late singer’s grave and defacing his tombstone. In the shocking video, the perpetrator vandalised the site in various ways, including pouring Coca-Cola onto the grave, drawing on the tombstone with a marker and using a hammer to break Wong Ka Kui’s photo on his tombstone.

A cemetery staff discovered the aftermath of the act and immediately called the police. According to reports, the man in the video was a 15-year-old YouTuber named ‘Bald Bob (光头Bob)’. He has since been arrested, along with a 23-year-old man believed to have been the one filming the video. The pair are now under police custody for questioning. Meanwhile, Wong Ka Kui’s grave has been temporarily closed for repair.

Following reports, Beyond members have expressed outrage over the 15-year-old’s actions. Bassist Wong Ka Keung (黃家強) posted an emotional rant on Facebook to condemn the teen. The post wrote, “What kind of country is this? Morality has fallen to this level. You travel thousands of miles to destroy other people’s cemeteries. What do you get from doing what you did?”. The younger brother of Wong Ka Kui also called the perpetrator a “pathetic, shameful, pitiful and hateful bastard” for what he did.

Beyond’s drummer, Yip Sai Wing (葉世榮), also reacted to the incident, saying, “What happened at Ka Kui’s grave today is really abominable. The two people have been arrested and must be punished by law. Ka Kui’s spirit in heaven will not let them go free!”. Guitarist Paul Wong (黃貫中) also responded to the reports, advocating for the punishment of the two men.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first reported incident of vandalism towards Wong Ka Kui’s grave because it had been vandalised in 2009, 2018 and 2019. We hope this incident will remind cemetery staff to be more alert to any visitors.
