The Hong Kong entertainment scene continues to mourn beloved star Benz Hui (許紹雄), who passed away in late October due to cancer-related organ failure. Some of the actor’s works are now being released posthumously, including one interview where he got candid about his illness.
Before his passing late last month, Benz guested on the RTHK talk show, “Doctors and You – Talking About Food, Drink, and Health II (医生与你——讲饮讲食讲健康II)”. While on the show, the actor discussed his lifestyle and daily diet. During this interview, the TVB star also spoke candidly about his battle with kidney cancer. It’s believed this was the first time Benz publicly shared about his diagnosis.

On the show, the late actor revealed that he found out about his illness last year. He said, “One day, I found that my urine had become very dark. At first, I thought it was just because I was inflamed, but after two weeks, the situation had not improved. At that time, I felt very confused.” Benz said a visit to the doctor found blood in his urine, and a further examination confirmed a tumour in one of his kidneys.
At that time, the cancer cells hadn’t spread, so Benz said his doctor advised him to undergo kidney removal surgery. The actor recalled being able to move around the day after the invasive surgery, which surprised the doctor. Benz quipped about the moment, saying, “The doctor asked me how I recovered so quickly, and I laughed and said, ‘It must be because your medical skills are too good!’”

The show’s hosts then asked Benz if he was worried about undergoing kidney removal surgery, to which he replied, “No, I just treat it like filming a movie”. The actor added, “Since I consulted the doctor, I naturally trust their professional judgment. There’s no need to be suspicious.” Throughout the show, the star maintained a cheerful personality and an optimistic attitude, often making the hosts and guests laugh with his jokes.
The episode of Benz’s guest appearance will premiere on 11th November 2025 (Tuesday), 8pm (HKT). In the meantime, check out the teaser:
