When it comes to gifts, gold might be the best thing you can get. Maybe that’s why South Korean badminton player An Se Young (안세영) had an amusing reaction to receiving a gold bar after winning the 2025 PETRONAS Malaysia Open.
TikTok account @/badminloper recently shared a clip of An Se Young from an interview she did after winning the women’s single category. During the interview, the athlete asked about the item she received after securing the tournament title, thinking it was a pin. After receiving clarification that the item was a gold bar, An Se Young expressed disbelief before bursting out in laughter. She was also admiring the gold bar after learning about its legitimacy.
It’s believed that the item An Se Young received was the 999.9 Gold Bar from Habib Jewels. The gold bar was one of the gifts given to the athletes after winning the Malaysia Open, alongside the US$101,500 (approximately RM456,750) prize money. The gold bar comes in various options, but from its appearance, the athlete likely received the 1g option in the Blue Songket variation, priced at RM470.
Many netizens have since reacted to the video, cracking up at An Se Young’s reaction. Many pointed out that the badminton player resembles BIGBANG member Daesung when she laughs, joking that the two could be siblings. Meanwhile, others praised the choice of gold as a gift for the winners, saying it’s better than the flowers or soft toys the winning athletes typically receive.
An Se Young defended her Malaysia Open title after beating Wang Zhi Yi from China in a 21-17, 21-7 match. We’re sure the gold bar is an apt reward for the athlete’s hard work and determination on the court.
