It’s not uncommon for K-Pop stars to perform a sexy dance number. However, it can be concerning when the idol performing said routine is still a minor. BABYMONSTER (베이비몬스터) member Chiquita’s (치키타) recent performance at her group’s solo concert sparked concern and outrage over its mature theme.

Over the weekend, BABYMONSTER performed at the Jamsil Indoor Stadium in Seoul, kicking off their “CHOOM” world tour. The concert featured several new performances, including solo stages for the members. However, it was Chiquita’s performance which sparked the most concern, as many thought it was inappropriate for her age.

For her solo performance, the 17-year-old performed a cover of Fifth Harmony’s hit song, “Worth It”. The stage began with a dance routine which included sensual movements and slightly provocative floor choreography. Dressed in a red halter top and shorts, Chiquita continued the rest of the performance, drawing cheers from the audience.

While the idol received praise for her solo performance, the routine understandably sparked concern. Many felt the choreography was too mature for the minor, arguing that some movements were too provocative for a teenager. The debate also prompted backlash towards BABYMONSTER’s agency, YG Entertainment.

Many expressed outrage towards the company for pushing a mature concept onto Chiquita, accusing it of oversexualising a minor. It’s worth noting that YG Entertainment previously sparked heated debate over BABYMONSTER’s “CHOOM” choreography, where all the members, including the youngest, were twerking.

Some fans also called out the double standard with YG Entertainment, noting that the company has repeatedly gotten away with pushing a sexy concept on Chiquita and the rest of BABYMONSTER. Meanwhile, other K-Pop companies have received massive backlash for similar situations, even when their idols are older.

Of course, some fans defended the routine, arguing that a young dancer should be allowed to perform a mature choreography without being sexualised. Some also contended that as long as Chiquita is comfortable with the performance, fans have no say in whether she’s allowed to perform the routine.

As of now, there’s no news of whether Chiquita or YG Entertainment will revise the routine to make it more age-appropriate. However, fans continue to urge the company to protect their underage idols.
