On 20th November, Hong Kong actor Andy Lau (刘德华) shared the devastating news of his father’s death with his fans. Lau Lai (刘礼) passed away peacefully at the age of 96, surrounded by his loved ones.
Yesterday (5th November), Andy and his family held a memorial ceremony for his father at a Hong Kong funeral home. Andy was the first to arrive at the funeral home, with his wife Carol Chu (朱丽倩) and daughter Hanna (刘向蕙). The star was seen with a solemn expression as he entered the building but still greeted the paparazzi who gathered in front of the funeral home.
Many other celebrities also attended the memorial service to pay respect to Andy’s late father. The stars in attendance included actors Simon Yam (任達華), Ray Lui (吕良伟) and Felix Wong (黄日华), actress Sandra Ng (吴君如) and director Johnnie To (杜琪峯). Some celebrities like singer Joey Yung (容祖兒) and actor Nicholas Tse (謝霆鋒) also sent in flower wreaths to express their condolences.
News outlets reported that police officers were also at the funeral home to help control the crowd of paparazzi. Andy’s management also prepared for fans of the star to pay their respects to the deceased. Reports say about 400 fans were escorted by staff as they entered the funeral home to pay respects to the late Lau Lai.
The death of his father has been devastating for the actor, who has remained low-key since announcing the news through his website. Andy is known for having a close relationship with his parents, even calling his father “the teacher he respects the most”. Since the announcement of Lau Lai’s death, many fans have extended their condolences to the actor and his family.
