While some prefer to watch films in the comfort of their own homes, many still enjoy going to the cinema for a fully immersive experience. Unfortunately, watching something on the big screen can be a bit of a gamble, as you might encounter technical or structural issues, unexpected hiccups or even inconsiderate and obnoxious fellow cinemagoers.
There was once a viral incident in which a fire alarm was triggered by a customer who had been caught vaping in the cinema hall, forcing everyone to evacuate. Setting off emergency procedures through sheer inconsideration is frustrating enough, but doing so intentionally as a prank would get anyone riled up. Here’s what happened at Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) in Mid Valley Megamall:

Over the weekend, cinemagoers at GSC Mid Valley Megamall were forced to evacuate the premises after the fire alarm went off. The incident reportedly occurred at around 10pm, and everyone gathered in front of the cinema while staff checked what had triggered the alarm. According to a user on Thread, it was believed that someone had allegedly pressed the fire alarm button located inside the cinema.
“We don’t know who thought it would be a good idea to press the fire alarm button, but everyone was forced to evacuate while we were enjoying our films. Refunds are being processed. Malaysia, we really don’t need this kind of attitude,” the user wrote. At the time of writing, neither GSC nor Mid Valley Megamall had issued a statement regarding the incident. The Thread post has since gone viral, with many criticising the person who pressed the fire alarm button. It is widely believed to have been intentional, as these buttons are not usually easily accessible and typically require someone to break the glass to activate them.

Others suspect that someone may have been vaping in one of the cinema halls or toilets, which could have triggered the alarm, as similar incidents have occurred before. Regardless of whether it was intentional or not, both netizens and dissatisfied customers hope that action will be taken against the perpetrator. The Thread user who posted about the incident added that they never received an official explanation of what happened, but the GSC manager did offer refunds to those who requested them, while others were able to resume watching their films once they were allowed to return to their respective halls. Thankfully, there was no real emergency, but what do you think happened? Watch the viral clip below:
