Vice Admiral Holdo Going Kamikaze in The Last Jedi Isn’t A Plot Hole Says Rian Johnson

ONE of the many complaints (and boy are there many) about “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” concerns Vice Admiral Holdo (Laura Dern) going full Kamikaze on the First Order.

This scene happens just before the 3rd act at planet Crait, in which Holdo turns The Resistance Cruiser around, sets it to hyperdrive and flies straight into Snoke’s ship at light speed. What follows is one of, if not the most beautifully shot and rendered sequences in all of Star Wars.

While most people love the scene, there are some who claim that it’s a major plothole, questioning why zooming at lightspeed into an enemy ship hasn’t been done before, both by the good guys and the bad.

In an interview with “Slash Film” director of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” Rian Johnson had this to say:

I think there’s various ways you can go with it. But it’s not like it was the plan to do this. It’s a spur of the moment thing. It’s this idea that she gets and she sits down and f**king does, and it obviously takes everybody completely by surprise. It takes Hux by surprise. The fact that Hux doesn’t see it coming means it’s probably not a standard military maneuver. I think it was something that Holdo pulled out of her butt in the moment.

The Star Wars canon is one of the more interesting aspects of this franchise, as everything that’s part of the official canon — novels, comics, TV Series, etc — is (supposed to be) taken into account in the overall continuity. While it’s important that story beats do not contradict the established canon, fans need to remember that just because something isn’t part of the canon YET, it doesn’t mean that it cannot be canon now.

Was it previously established in canon that hyper-driving into another vehicle defies the laws of Star Wars physics? No? So, calm your tits people.
