Yay! After 35 years, “Urban Cowboy” will finally be making its comeback!
According to Variety, 20th Century Fox is working closely with writer-director Craig Brewer and Paramount TV to bring the 1980 American western romantic drama film to our television screens.
Brewer has already signed on to direct and write the script for the pilot episode of the show. In addition to that, he will be executive producing the whole series, which is actually a joint project between Paramount TV and 20th Century Fox TV. Chris Levinson, Robert Evans, Sue Naegle, and James Sikura will be executive producing with Brewer.
The TV adaptation will stay true to the original movie for most parts, as it follows the love-hate relationship between Buford Uan “Bud” Davis and Sissy Davis. But the story will feature a more relevant take on it as it “unfolds against the gritty backdrop of rodeos, oil refineries, line dancing clubs and other aspects of modern-day Texas”.
“Urban Cowboy” is currently in its infancy production stage, as the writers are still in the early stages of penning the script. However, it has already been revealed that the series will possibly be a partner series for Fox’s “Empire”.
Brewer is a film director and screenwriter who achieved mainstream fame with the release of his 2015 independent drama film “Hustle & Flow”. The movie bagged Brewer the Audience Award at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, and did well commercially too. The writer-director also tested his hands as a producer in the concert documentary, “Katy Perry: Part of Me“.
The TV series adaptation of “Urban Cowboy” currently has no release date.
