UOB Malaysia is bringing back its Painting of the Year competition and this year, it’s bigger! The bank has recently launched its 13th UOB Painting of the Year (POY) (Malaysia) competition and is inviting all artists to uncover their passion for art and showcase their ingenuity.

The UOB POY competition is the bank’s flagship regional visual arts programme and is one of Southeast Asia’s most prestigious annual art competitions. Aimed to uncover and nurture artistic talent, the regional art competition has expanded its reach this year to Vietnam, enabling many more artists to uncover their passion for art.

Ms Ng Wei Wei, Chief Executive Officer of UOB Malaysia said, “At UOB Malaysia, we believe that art plays a catalytic role in society in raising social change, creating a bigger conversation and uniting people of different cultures and backgrounds. In line with the Bank’s Purpose of ‘Building the future of ASEAN’, the launch of the 13th edition of our annual UOB POY art competition affirms our longstanding support of the Malaysian arts, and our commitment to nurturing the next generation of Southeast Asian artists, helping them to reach their full potential.”

All submissions for the 13th UOB POY (Malaysia) competition will be received digitally and submissions are open from today until 31st July 2023. The competition is open to all Malaysian citizens and permanent residents and the winners will be announced at an award ceremony in September later this year.

The panel of judges for the competition includes Ms. Bibi Chew, the Industry Advisory Panel (Visual Arts) for CENDANA Malaysia and the Head of Illustration and Senior Lecturer at the Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA), Mr. Choy Chun Wei, a leading Malaysian contemporary artist whose works have been exhibited internationally across China, the United States, and the United Kingdom, and Mr. Ahmad Fuad Osman, a leading Malaysian contemporary artist and the judge of the National Art Gallery’s Young Contemporaries Awards.

The top winner for each country will receive a country award prize of RM100,000 and will be among the five winners from Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam to compete for the coveted UOB Southeast Asian Painting of the Year award. The overall winner will receive an additional prize award of S$13,000 and a chance for a residency programme at the renowned Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan.

To further support the pursuit of art by aspiring artists in the region, UOB Malaysia has also raised the prize money for the Emerging Artist Category, with the Most Promising Artist of the Year winner receiving RM16,000, up from previous years.
