So, has anyone noticed lately that “Ramadhan” is now being spelt as “Ramadan”? Apparently, you aren’t going crazy and there’s a reason for that. An official reason, even.

The Institute of Language and Literature (Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka) recently released an infographic for certain words in an attempt to clear up the spelling for some popular words. However, it seems not everyone agrees with said spelling.

The infographic was uploaded to their socials today (11th March), depicting the spelling of certain words in Bahasa Melayu. For instance, “Murtabak” is now spelt as “Martabak“, “Bazaar” is now “Bazar“, “Kuetiow” is now “Kuetiau” and “Briyani” is now “Beriyani“. The changes have sparked plenty of comments since.

Some have thanked the DBP for resolving their confusion while others have attempted to get clarification for the official spelling of other words. Most however have been on the fence about selected words.

A few suggested “Ramadan” should be spelt as “Ramadon/Ramadhon” as the Indonesians do. Others have admitted to being selective about what they think is right. “I’ll take note of all except Ramadhan,” one said. Another quipped: “Apologies, I don’t agree with some of it and will keep choosing to use the wrong (spellings).”

Well, official or not, it’s clear not everyone will be using the newly released spellings. Still, language is an ever-changing art, so it is to be expected. In the meantime, what do you guys think about the new spellings? Yea, or nay?
