K-pop stage outfits have long been known for their daring edge. For example, recently BLACKPINK’s (블랙핑크) Lisa’s (ลิซ่า/리사) skin-baring ensemble drew criticism and concern. However, when international acts take their shows to Malaysia, it’s not unusual to see a style shift toward modesty. That now includes TWICE (트와이스), whose recent concert in Kuala Lumpur has become a hot topic after fans noticed the group’s outfits were slightly altered for the occasion.
TWICE are currently on the first leg of their “This Is For” world tour, which kicked off in Korea on 19th July and includes stops across Asia and Oceania. Their performance in Malaysia on 25th October marked their first concert in the country since 2019, a long-awaited return that drew thousands of ONCEs eager to see the group live once again.

While the concert itself was filled with electrifying performances and fan-favourite hits, one detail caught the attention of both attendees and online fans. During a segment of the show, TWICE appeared in modified versions of their popular “cow-print” stage outfits. Observers noted that the new versions featured additional skin-tone fabric covering areas around the chest and midriff, a noticeable shift from previous performances.
The change quickly went viral across multiple social media platforms, prompting mixed reactions from netizens. Some praised the group and their stylists for showing cultural sensitivity, suggesting the adjustments were made out of respect for Malaysia’s more conservative norms. Fans applauded TWICE for their awareness and professionalism in adapting to local expectations without compromising their signature charm and energy on stage.

However, others felt that the outfit modifications were unnecessary, arguing that such adjustments reinforced outdated perceptions about modesty and cultural expectations. Some international fans expressed disappointment, questioning whether the change was influenced by local pressure rather than creative choice.
At the same time, discussions around the issue have taken a more serious tone, with certain netizens calling out what they perceive as Islamophobic undertones in the backlash. Supporters of the group have urged others to view the decision in context, highlighting that cultural respect should not be mistaken for censorship.

Despite the online debate, TWICE’s Kuala Lumpur concert was widely celebrated as a successful and memorable night for fans. The group’s professionalism, energy, and ability to connect with their audience once again showcased why they remain one of the most beloved acts in K-pop. For many, the conversation surrounding their outfits only underscored the broader discussion of cultural understanding in the world of global entertainment.
What do you think about TWICE’s outfit change? Was it a thoughtful gesture of respect, or a move that went too far?
