So as food-loving Malaysians, we are quite the sweet tooth as well – cakes, local kuihs, ice cream..we love them all! But as trends continue to change, many specialty cafes are serving up new, creative, and most importantly, delicious desserts in various forms.

1. Acai Berry Bowl @ Goodness Greens Cafe
Unless if you’ve been living under a rock, you’d know about acai bowls.

2. Strawberry Waffles @ Soft Launch
What’s better than heaven? Why, fresh strawberries, homemade whipped cream, and crunchy waffles drizzled with some maple syrup, of course!
Strawberry waffles are Soft Launch Cafe & Dessert’s signature dessert and it can definitely satisfy any sweet tooth. The slight tanginess from the strawberries goes especially well with the maple syrup’s sweetness so make sure you cut a big piece of waffle, fill it up with a little bit of everything, and consume it in one go! You won’t regret it 🙂

3. Charcoal Sesame Egg Tarts @ Bunn Choon Bakery
Egg tarts have always been a local favourite. In case you’re not familiar with them, a perfectly done egg tart consists of a flaky outer crust and is filled with sweet egg custard. Sounds yummy already, eh?
Head down to Bunn Choon Bakery for some freshly baked mini egg tarts because you will not be disappointed! Besides traditional egg tarts, the century-old family business also offers specially made charcoal sesame egg tarts, which are very popular among locals and tourists. The unique egg tarts are extremely fragrant and crumbly, just perfect for afternoon tea. You can also pre-order these if you want to avoid the long wait.

4. Durian Cendol @ Rojak & Cendol
Whether you love it or hate it, the durian aka the “King of fruits”, will always have a special place in our hearts. The same goes for cendol!
Durian cendol is no new concept, but the Rojak & Cendol stall in Shah Alam has created a whole new craze by adding fresh durian flesh into cendol. The sweet syrupy brown sugar and rich santan aroma (coconut milk) in the cendol complements the durian’s strong flavours surprisingly well. It’s no wonder that people are willing to queue for hours to get a bowl of sinful goodness.
The stall opens at 6pm but make sure to go early to avoid the long queue!

5. Hanjuku Cheese Tart @ Tokyo Secret
Cheese for dessert? Yes, please!
Inspired by the melting cheese tarts in Tokyo, Japan, Tokyo Secret is a Hong Kong-based Japanese cafe that has just landed in Malaysia last month. Their popular Hanjuku (half-baked) Cheese Tarts are freshly baked everyday and its exquisite aroma is nothing like you’ve ever smelt before.
Although waiting time can be long, it is definitely worth the wait as each tart is crumbly, fragrant, and filled with delicately sweet and thick molten cheese filling. Aside from the cheese tarts, the cafe also offers other sweet selections such as Fujiyama Winter, Uji Frost, special themed ice cream, and Fusion Affogato.

6. Rose-shaped Gelato @ Miss Rose
“Money can’t buy happiness, but it can buy gelato. And that’s almost the same thing.”
A gelato is an ice cream’s Italian cousin and it is made with a base of milk, cream, and sugar; flavoured with fruits, nut purees, and other flavourings. The concept has been around in Malaysia for quite some time now, so what makes Miss Rose’s gelato so special?
Miss Rose is known for their beautiful rose-shaped gelato! Choose 2 flavours and the cafe’s expert scoopers will combine them into delicious rose petals. Some of the cafe’s most popular flavours are Vanilla Cinnamoon, Bailey Brownie, Mango Tangoo, Orea Mint, Strawberry, and Mocha On The Rocks.

7. Musang King Durian Bingsu @ Hanbing Korean Dessert Cafe
Can’t get enough of durians? Then you would love Hanbing Korean Dessert Cafe’s new bingsu (Korean style shaved ice) – the Musang King durian bingsu!
In conjunction with Malaysia’s durian season, which usually falls in June until August each year, the eatery uses fresh Musang King flesh in their homemade aromatic durian ice cream. The portion is big enough for 2, so make sure to bring along your durian-loving friend to share this heavenly snow ice creation.
If you don’t like durians, the dessert place also offers other bingsu selections such as blueberry, cookies and cream, and matcha (green tea).

8. Pan-fried Ice Cream @ Monzeter Premium Fried Ice Cream
Thai pan-fried ice cream in Malaysia? No Way!
That’s right, you don’t have to travel all the way to Thailand for this sweet cup of goodness anymore because there are 2 stalls in the Klang Valley to fix your fried ice cream crave. Monzeter prepares your dessert right in front of your eyes on an ice “grill” and all you have to do is pick your favourite flavour and toppings.
