With the northeast monsoon on the horizon, digital travel platform Agoda shares the top beach destinations that Malaysians are interested in visiting before the rain hits. Agoda’s insights reveal that the coastal paradises of eastern Peninsular Malaysia are making waves as the most searched beach destination for those seeking a sun-soaked escape in September or October.

Based on Agoda’s accommodation search data, Kuantan, Kuala Terengganu, Desaru, Perhentian Islands, and Tioman Island are the most popular beach destinations for Malaysians in the coming months. An increasing number of Malaysians are searching for getaways in September and October: Agoda noted 30% more domestic accommodation searches than last year.

“Malaysia’s coastal destinations are truly in a league of their own, offering travellers stunning landscapes and a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure,” said Fabian Teja, Country Director Malaysia and Brunei at Agoda. “The holidays in September and October present a prime opportunity to explore Malaysia’s top beaches before the weather shifts. At Agoda, we are dedicated to connecting travellers with the best accommodation deals, making it easier to enjoy a sun-filled retreat for less.”

Agoda shines a spotlight on the top coastal gems capturing travelers’ attention, providing beach lovers the chance to plan one last sun-kissed hurrah before the rainy season arrives.

Kuantan’s beaches offer a diverse experience along Malaysia’s east coast. Teluk Cempedak is a favourite for its soft sands, unique rock formations, and lively boardwalk, ideal for both relaxation and evening strolls. Pantai Batu Hitam, named for its striking black stones, offers a picturesque and peaceful retreat with a touch of natural mystique. Cherating Beach, just a short drive away, is famous for its surf-friendly waves and as a sanctuary for nesting sea turtles. Together, these beaches showcase Kuantan’s natural beauty and allure.

This beach is popular for both lively seaside activities and serene moments to unwind. Another gem, Pantai Teluk Ketapang, enchants visitors with its calm waters and vibrant sunsets, making it a great spot for a blissful beach getaway.

Desaru’s beaches are a haven for family travellers, featuring long stretches of golden sands and calm waters, perfect for a day of fun in the sun. The gentle waves make it safe for young children to kick up a splash, while a variety of nearby attractions, like waterparks and nature reserves, provide endless entertainment for all ages. With its family-friendly resorts and easy accessibility, Desaru provides a memorable beach getaway that balances both relaxation and adventure.

Perhentian Islands

The Perhentian Islands, comprising Pulau Perhentian Besar and Pulau Perhentian Kecil, are a tropical paradise renowned for their crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and abundant marine life, making them premier spots for snorkelling and diving. Pulau Perhentian Besar offers a more secluded haven for families and those seeking a slower pace, while Pulau Perhentian Kecil attracts backpackers with its energetic vibe. The unspoiled natural beauty, from powdery white sand beaches to lush jungles, makes these islands an exceptional destination for both adventure and unwinding.

Tioman Island

Tioman Island, one of Malaysia’s top dive destinations, is celebrated for its rich marine biodiversity and clear underwater visibility. Highlights include the vibrant coral gardens of Pulau Renggis and the dramatic seascapes of Soyak Island Marine Park. This year, Tioman added to its appeal by becoming the first island in Malaysia to sink two light rail transit (LRT) coaches in Monkey Bay, creating a unique artificial reef and breeding ground for fish and other marine life. Beyond underwater adventures, visitors can explore the island’s lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls and experience local culture in traditional villages like Kampung Air Batang.
