Halloween is around the corner. But which franchise offers the biggest jumps this spooky season?

Using data from movie blogs, marketing agency Dark Horse tallied up the jumpscares in famous horror franchises. Then, assuming a good scare equals a physical jump of half a metre (0.50) they’ve calculated exactly how high we’re jumping watching our favourite scary movies.

The data reveals that the Halloween franchise has the most jumpscares – 119 across 11 movies (discounting the latest movie Halloween Kills) which would equal a whopping 60.5 metres in jumps. If you got spooked at every jump scare, you would have jumped higher than the Leaning Tower of Pisa by the end of the last Halloween movie!

Top 10 Horror Franchises with the Most Jumpscares:

  1. “Halloween”
  2. “Paranormal Activity”
  3. “Scream”
  4. “The Evil Dead”
  5. “Insidious”
  6. “Friday the 13th”
  7. “A Nightmare on Elm Street”
  8. “Child’s Play”
  9. “Annabelle”
  10. “Alien”

For equivalents, the 60.5 metres you’ll be jumping watching all of the “Halloween” movies is the equivalent to the height of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The 47.7 metres of the “Paranormal Activity” franchise is about the height of the Statue of Liberty (without the base). And the 40.1 metres of jumps for the “Scream” series would put you about as high as the funnels on the Titanic.

Top 10 Horror Directors with the Most Jump Scares:

  1. James Wan
  2. Wes Craven
  3. Sam Raimi
  4. Mike Flanagan
  5. John Carpenter
  6. Steve Miner
  7. Gregory Plotkin
  8. Johannes Roberts
  9. William Brent Bell
  10. Paul W.S. Anderson

When it comes to directors, it’s James Wan, director of “Insidious”, “The Conjuring” and “Malignant” who comes out on top – with 119 jump scares across his movies. The late great Wes Craven, director of “Scream”, “The Last House on the Left” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street”, comes next with 114, followed by “The Evil Dead” and “Drag Me to Hell” director Sam Raimi with 89.

John Keating, MD of Dark Horse said: “There’s actually something cathartic about a jump scare – you get a shot of adrenaline to the body, and a big burst of dopamine having a laugh with your friends afterwards. Because we understand that jump scares are safe, we get to enjoy the pumped up feeling we’d get in a scary situation in a touristy way. With ‘Halloween’ here and ‘Halloween Kills’ in cinemas, we wanted to find out which franchise had the most jump scares however – and tally up just how you’d actually jump to each scare! If you want to see how you fare, you can find the first five ‘Halloween’ movies on Netflix too!”
