The Labubu toys have become all the rage since BLACKPINK’s Lisa (리사) posted about her purchase on Instagram Stories last month. The Labubu trend itself is mostly harmless but the sudden surge in popularity has led to numerous thefts and scams, as many have struggled to get their hands on these collectable items, while others are seeking to resell a few for a profit.
Other than the potential dangers associated with purchasing these toys, some parents have chosen not to buy them for their children for other specific reasons. Local singer-actress Abby Abadi is one such parent, as she explained her reasons for not wanting to buy Labubu for her children. Here’s what she said:
In a now-expired Instagram Story posted over the weekend, Abby shared a screenshot of a viral TikTok video featuring the Labubu toys, which claimed the figures are inspired by the devil. “The other day, my daughter Daiyan asked me to buy her those Labubu toys. They’re actually kind of scary, so I told her that they would bite her in her sleep. My husband told me that he read an article about these dolls, and it turns out they’re actually demon characters. How terrifying,” she wrote.
The singer proceeded to warn her fans about buying the popular item, fearing that they would do more harm than good. “For those who have already bought one, throw it away. What if it wakes up?” the 41-year-old stated. As for the allegations and rumours that Labubu is a demon character or is associated with the devil, SNKRDUNK Magazine reported earlier this month that the popular figure is actually an elf known for its mischievous personality. The creator, Kasing Lung, has explained that the character embodies the spirit of childhood adventure and imagination, which is reflected in its many quirky facial expressions.
It is also worth noting that Labubu is part of a large group of characters known as The Monsters, which is inspired by Nordic fairytales, as previously mentioned in the last article.
