Everyone has their own preferences of what they’re looking for in a smartphone and there have been tons of exciting releases this year – from the new Oppo Find N3 series to the latest iPhone 15 variants. With all these amazing brands, which ones take the top spot, especially among Malaysians?

Luckily, there’s an answer to that question. In a recent survey conducted by John’s Phones, the study revealed that there are 3 smartphone brands that Malaysians love the most.

It’s a well-known fact that both Samsung and Apple are leading the global tech market when it comes to their smartphones. So it’s no surprise when it was revealed that these two brands have taken the top spot in the Malaysian market, with Apple having a market share of 29.61% and Samsung with 14.54%, followed by Oppo with 12.55%.

If you’re curious about the overall global market shares this year, here is the list of where each smartphone brand ranks:

  1. Apple (28.4%)
  2. Samsung (28.2%)
  3. Xiaomi (12.7 %)
  4. Oppo (5.5%)
  5. Huawei (5.3%)
  6. Vivo (4.3%)
  7. Realme (3.2%)
  8. Motorola (2.3%)
  9. OnePlus (1.1%)

John’s Phone’s survey also revealed that Apple has the largest market share in 29 countries, including Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States while Samsung ranks first in 26 countries, including Mexico, Poland and of course, its home country of South Korea.

Interestingly enough, the survey also said that Xiaomi was predicted to surpass both Apple and Samsung in recent years but unfortunately for the Chinese brand, it only accounts for 10.98% of the global market today, according to Canalys, a technology market analysis firm.

As for which phones were sold the most around the world, according to the data collected (from the first 6 months of 2023) by the website, results showed that the most popular phone from Apple that was sold was the iPhone 14 Pro Max, followed by the iPhone 14 Pro, whereas the most popular one from Samsung was the Galaxy A14, followed by the S23 Ultra.

If you’re curious to know how the study was conducted, the team at John’s Phones collected data from websites such as Canalys, StatCounter, which tracks internet usage from different mobile devices, and research firm Omdia, which includes the number of units that were shipped globally. Were you surprised by the results?
