An unnatural mist is seeping in and the monsters from other dimensions are invading the small town in Bridgton, Maine again.

According to TheWrap, Dimension Television has announced that Stephen King‘s 1980 horror novella “The Mist” will be made into a TV series and it is currently in development.

“The Mist” movie was first adapted into a film by “The Walking Dead” creator Frank Darabont in 2007. Though it only grossed USD57 million, it received mainly positive reviews from critics. The original novella even inspired some high profile video games such as “Silent Hill” and “Half-Life”.

For the series, it will use the book and the film as influences, rather than being directly based on the novella. King has reportedly given his blessing to the project, which is currently being written by Christian Torpe, critically acclaimed scriptwriter and creator of Danish TV series “Rita”.

It will tell “an original story about a seemingly innocuous mist that seeps into a small town but contains limitless havoc”. Similar to the film, the plot will revolve around the town residents who struggle to survive as the mist causes “their darkest demons to appear”, stirring up psychological terrors and forcing the to battle the otherworldly creatures.

Regarding the new TV series, Bob Weinstein, co-chairman of The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films, said in a statement:

The terror and drama in Stephen King’s novella are so vast that we felt serialized television is the best place to explore them in greater depth.

“With this show, Christian has created a fascinating band of characters and a story with infinite scares,” he added.

It is unclear who will direct or star in it as further details are kept under wraps. What we do know is that Torpe, who is currently finishing the 4th season of “Rita”, has developed programming for both Showtime and AMC.

Who do you think should join the cast? Which director do you think will pick up the project? Let us know in the comments box below.
