At The Westin Desaru Coast Resort, sustainability is thoughtfully woven into every part of the stay. From how the hotel sources its ingredients to how they manage energy and reduces waste, each initiative reflects a conscious effort to care for the environment while supporting guests’ well-being. It is not about asking guests to do more, but about creating a stay that feels better, lighter, and more connected to the place around the guests.

Bacfree Water Filtration System

Halal-certified Bacfree water filtration systems are equipped throughout the resort, including guest rooms and Daily Treats. This is another step The Westin Desaru Coast Resort have taken from using glass bottles previously. This upgrade saves the hotel around 200,000 plastic bottles going to landfill each year.

Refillable Bath Amenities

The Westin Desaru Coast Resort uses larger refillable dispensers in their bathrooms. They are mounted in the shower area and are regularly refilled with Westin’s signature bath products. This is part of the hotel’s sustainability initiative to reduce single-use plastics.

Cage-Free Eggs

At The Westin Desaru Coast Resort, their eggs are laid by free-roaming hens that are locally sourced from a nearby egg farm distributor.

Boomgrow Vegetables

Their salads and herbs are used from the Resort’s technology-controlled onsite farm, BoomGrow Indoor Precision Farming technology, which produces pesticide-free, clean, and harvested at their peak for unrivaled freshness using up to 95% less water than traditional farming. Kitchen off‑cuts are composted and returned to the soil, proving that sustainability can be both delicious and responsible.

Biodegradable Take Away Packaging And Straw

The Westin Desaru Coast Resort’s straws and takeaway packaging are made from a plant-based material derived from corn starch, making them 100% compostable and free of harmful BPA.

Feed Our Loved Ones – FOLO Farm

The hotel is partnering with WWF to help reduce the amount of wasted food from the production side of operations. The Westin Desaru Coast Resort also partnered with FOLO Farm in Johor, which will take the hotel’s post-consumer food waste. FOLO Farm will compost it and use it on their 100% organic and sustainable permaculture farm.

Energy Efficient Lighting

The Westin Desaru Coast Resort’s parking bay lighting has been retrofitted to increase energy efficiency. Similarly, the hotel’s staircases are equipped with a motion-sensor lighting system.

Digital Food Waste Tracking – MESH

With Westin’s MESH (Make Every Second Helpful), a digital food waste tracking system that monitors waste in real time, the culinary team can reduce waste by providing data on what’s being wasted and why, enabling more sustainable food purchasing, preparation, and portioning decisions. This system supports Westin’s commitment to environmental responsibility and resource conservation.

Sustainable Energy

Solar panels installed throughout the hotel and at the Desaru Coast Conference Centre quietly generate renewable energy behind the scenes and reduce electricity bills. For getting around Desaru Coast, electric‑powered buggies and shuttle buses offer low‑carbon transport, while the resort’s bicycle rental initiative invites discerning guests to explore the coastline while supporting a slower and lighter way to experience the destination.

Naturally Grounded, Thoughtfully Designed

The Westin Desaru Coast Resort’s Muara Lagoon reflects the resort’s respect for nature through design. The use of Sukabumi stone supports natural temperature regulation while reducing the need for intensive chemical treatment. Its durability and mineral properties help maintain a more balanced, energy-conscious pool environment, reflecting a design approach that is both restorative and mindful of long-term impact.

Daily Responsible Practices

The resort practices proper battery waste management through the proper channel; all used coffee grounds and eggshells are thoughtfully recycled and turned into nutrient-rich fertiliser for the herb garden, paperless billing through FreedomPay at the Front Desk, and continuous resource‑saving initiatives across operations that help demonstrate sustainability lives not in one action, but in many mindful choices.

Sustainability at The Westin Desaru Coast Resort is not about asking guests to do more, but it’s about doing better together. The Westin Desaru Coast Resort thanks its guests for being part of a stay that renews, restores, and respects the place we call home.
