The Runway Meets Outer Space: Prada and Axiom Space Unveil the High-Tech Inner Core of the Artemis IV Lunar Suit

Luxury fashion powerhouse Prada and aerospace pioneer Axiom Space have taken over Manhattan to unveil the inner layer of the next-generation lunar outfit.

Known officially as the Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment, this cutting-edge piece of engineering serves as the literal high-performance foundation worn directly against the body inside the main Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit suit. Designed explicitly for NASA’s historic Artemis IV mission, which aims to return humans to the lunar surface for the first time in more than fifty years, this drop moves the conversation away from basic styling into life-saving material science.

To combat the blistering four-hundred-degree temperature fluctuations at the lunar South Pole, the undergarment manages immense metabolic body heat during grueling eight-hour spacewalks. It features a massive network of medical-grade polyurethane tubes snaking across the body’s major muscle groups, circulating cold water to pull heat away to the suit’s portable life-support system. Recognizing that deep space leaves zero room for error, Axiom has incorporated a fully redundant backup cooling loop that instantly activates if the primary system ever encounters an issue.

Beyond thermal regulation, the suit pulls double duty by managing how astronauts breathe under heavy exertion. A parallel system delivers a steady, refreshing stream of pure oxygen directly across the astronaut’s face inside the helmet. This constant airflow acts as a sweep, continuously washing away exhaled carbon dioxide to prevent hazardous gas pockets from forming around the mouth and nose. The trapped gas is then seamlessly routed back into the life-support system’s chemical scrubbers to be filtered before the fresh oxygen is safely recirculated.

Prada’s multi-decade expertise in custom tailoring and engineered knitting completely alters the trajectory of aerospace design. By utilizing advanced 3D modeling and custom synthetic fiber blends, the Italian fashion house managed to weave a seamless, continuous, and moisture-wicking jumpsuit that drastically increases an astronaut’s range of motion while eliminating painful chafing. The complete, fully certified suit is on track for delivery to NASA by December 2026, with Prada actively aiming to market this tailored tech to commercial space outfits like SpaceX and Blue Origin.
