A TV adaptation of “Batman” featuring a lesbian superhero in the lead role is coming to the small screens.
DC has announced that it is currently developing a “Batwoman” series for The CW which is set to be the first live-action superhero series with an openly gay lead.
Batwoman‘s official logline is as follows:
“Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”
According to TV Line, the producers of the series are seeking to cast a lesbian actress of any ethnicity to play the first openly gay lead which is already scheduled to cross over into the Arrowverse, for the next seasons of “Arrow”, “The Flash”, and “Supergirl”.
Batwoman was first introduced in 1956 as a potential love interest for Batman, and this was to dispel accusations that Batman and Robin were thinly-disguised gay propaganda.
In 2006, the superheroine was reintroduced as a gay woman called Kate Kane which became the first ever lesbian superhero title DC character.
