As the saying goes: “One man’s meat is another man’s poison”. That might be the reason why former Malaysian men’s doubles player Tan Boon Heong (陈文宏) wasn’t too fussed after receiving complaints about his new business venture into dried minced pork meat (Bakkwa).

Since retiring from the competitive badminton scene, Tan Boon Heong has been dabbling in selling and endorsing various products, including dried minced pork meat. However, he allegedly received complaints recently claiming his bakkwa was unpalatable. This prompted Boon Heong to take to his socials to explain why.

“I have something to say,” the former shuttler announced yesterday (23rd January) on his Facebook. “(Even though) I sell bakkwa, Poon Choi, whatever, (you should) only buy it when you need to, don’t buy it impulsively.” He also thanked fans for supporting him, sharing that the reason why he was making the post was because two customers had recently complained his bakkwa tastes bad.

“(They said) it seems like plastic… perhaps the batch you bought had something wrong with it. It doesn’t matter, I can refund you or send you a new one,” Boon Heong said. He admitted that food was never 100% perfect, which was why he opined that having only two complaints after selling 2,500 packges was normal. Still, he was happy to take responsibility for any issues his customers had.

He also urged his customers to contact him directly with their complaints rather than harass his friends about it. Apparently, one of his customers had sent a voice message to Boon Heong’s friend claiming the bakkwa wasn’t cheap nor was it delicious. “I didn’t force you to buy it,” he pointed out. “You can buy cheaper ones. Don’t blindly support (me). Only buy (my products) if you really want to buy them.”

Tan Boon Heong started selling his dried minced pork meat as early as December 2023 for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration. It’s allegedly been doing fairly well, and we have to admit Boon Heong’s willingness to cater to his customers must help his business.

Well, hopefully Boon Heong won’t receive more complaints about selling ‘plastic’ bakkwa. After all, once is an accident, twice is a coincidence and three times is a pattern. In the meantime, we wish him well as he continues his many, many ventures.
