We may all be Malaysians, but there are plenty of ways we differentiate ourselves from one another. The most telling one is of course, by our universities.

Recently, this talk show host started an intense discussion with a ‘theory’. According to her, one can judge the kind of person they are based on the university they graduated from. Needless to say, it received rather mixed reactions.

According to the Facebook post, the host claimed the university one attended said volumes about their personality. Of course, she didn’t stop at merely theorizing. She gave a few examples of local universities which the audience definitely knew.

Her first claim was that students who graduated from University of Malaya (UM) had good grades, but not a good family background. Some in the audience agreed, others protested. Her second declaration was that Taylor’s graduates had poor grades, but come from good families. Her final claim was that students from UTAR would have bad grades and have poor family backgrounds.

The speaker cheekily added that UTAR students always claimed that although their studies were easy, their exams were hard. “Of course (it’s like that),” she said. “If you think exams are easy, you would have already entered UM.” As to why she had made such a remark, she jokingly said that she wasn’t expecting any UTAR graduates at the scene given how much the entry ticket to the event had been priced.

Netizens aired their own views on the matter in comments. Some felt the comparison was unnecessary. “Education is not a joke,” one said sternly. “What do you want? To say that you were trained by “that university”, so (you’re) excellent?” Another pointed out that this kind of talk indicated jealousy.

Others went out of their way to prove that the speaker’s claims weren’t true. However, there were those who observed that it was supposed to be a comedic talk show. “It’s a talk show, don’t take it too seriously,” one comment read. However, another argued that comedy shouldn’t be derived from belittling or insulting others. “Everyone has different beginnings,” they added.

Well, we certainly do understand that what the speaker said was done in jest. However, some jokes may have more impact than we realise. As comedian Trevor Noah once said, “Just because something is a joke doesn’t mean it can’t be something else as well”.
