Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr.) Teuku Zakaria Teuku Nyak Puteh, famously known as P. Ramlee, is one of Malaysia’s greatest icons who has greatly contributed to the nation’s entertainment industry. Apart from acting, singing, writing, and producing, the love story between him and his wife Saloma was also widely known among Malaysians.

Before his marriage with the famous actress-singer, he was once married to another actress name Noorizan Mohd Noor and did you know that she left royalty to be with her then-true love? Here’s the full story:

Actress Noorizan Mohd Noor was famously known for her role in “Pontianak Kembali” (1962) and “Laksamana Do Re Mi” (1972). After her divorce from her first husband who was a customs officer, she married the 32nd Sultan of Perak, Sultan Yussuff Izzuddin Shah when she was 27 years old in 1954. She was then given the title of Her Royal Highness by her then-husband the following year.

Not long after her marriage to the Sultan, the couple went to see a show by P. Ramlee in Perak that was behested by His Royal Highness himself. Rumours circulated that Noorizan was ordered to not look into the entertainer’s eyes as it was said that women were easily enchanted by him. It seems that the rumours were true as Her Royal Highness and the actor fell in love when their eyes met.

The two began a secret relationship, calling each other over the phone for hours which was then found out after the palace’s phone bill spiked. Heartbroken, Sultan Yussuff divorced his wife and ordered her to leave the palace where she then officially got together with P. Ramlee. The lovebirds got married later the same year in 1955 when Noorizan was 28 and her husband 26. The icon composed the songs “Tidurlah Wahai Permaisuri” and “Berkorban Apa Saja” to dedicate his love for his wife.

Sadly, their love didn’t last as the two filed for divorce in 1961. However, the former lovers remained close friends and respected each other. Noorizan went back to Kuala Lumpur to begin her career as an actress and got her first role in “Siti Payong” in 1962. As faith would have it, in 1972, the actress worked together with her ex-husband in “Laksamana Do Re Mi” where he gave back her “royal title” as she played the role of Queen of Pasir Berdengung.

After learning their love story, would you be willing to leave royalty to be with your beloved?
