Taiwan and China’s relationship is complicated, and many stars have been blasted for advocating for reunification. Recently, there have been rumours that popular Taiwanese actress Ouyang Nana (欧阳娜娜) had her nationality revoked for expressing love for China.

The rumour stemmed from a recent video posted on YouTube alleging that Taiwan authorities had revoked Ouyang Nana’s citizenship. The video also claimed that the government had banned her from entering Taiwan for life. These allegations come after reports that Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party is targeting the star for advocating China and Taiwan’s unification.

Ouyang Nana has long expressed support for China, even stating that she is a Chinese person. In 2024, the star publicly supported China Central Television’s (CCTV) statement in favour of Chinese unification. The move drew immense backlash from Taiwanese people, with many calling the star a traitor for opposing Taiwan’s independence. The 24-year-old was also recently appointed as the cultural tourism ambassador for Ji’an City in Jiangxi province.

The Taiwanese government has refuted the rumours, clarifying that the viral video is fabricated and has no official source. However, authorities confirmed that Ouyang Nana could soon face investigation for advocating reunification. The cellist is one of the twenty stars the government is targeting for opposing Taiwan’s sovereignty. News reports did not name the other nineteen stars.

Authorities said that these celebrities will be investigated by Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) under the Cross-Strait Agreement. If Ouyang Nana or any of the stars were found to have broken regulations by engaging in any form of cooperation with China’s political, military or governmental entities, they could receive a fine ranging from NT$100,000 to NT$500,000 (approximately RM14,190 to RM70,950).

Ouyang Nana has yet to comment on the issue. However, Taiwanese citizens supported the investigation and the possibility of revoking the star’s nationality because of her past statements. What are your thoughts on this?
