Investment scams are so common nowadays that even celebrities aren’t immune to falling for them. Taiwanese actress Yako Chan (詹子晴) recently shared an experience of hers where she lost over RM100,000 to an investment scam she discovered online.

Yako, known by her nickname Ya Tou (丫头), was recently at a cryptocurrency learning camp in the Maldives. During an interview, she shared about a scam that happened to her years ago, which cost her a lot of money. According to the star, she came across an internet investment group and joined without much thought. She said, “After I entered, everyone followed the teacher on what to buy.”

She added that the teacher told her, “If you want to invest more, then you can join a more exclusive group.” The teacher even claimed that the group could “take you flying”, alluding that Yako could earn more in that group. The actress revealed that she managed to earn a profit at first, which got her addicted to investing. She even told her manager to keep an eye on her phone when she was busy so she wouldn’t miss an opportunity to place a bet.

However, Yako was not well-versed in investment, which caused her to start losing money. The singer started losing more and more as time went by. That led her to question if she was getting scammed. After searching online for more information, Yako discovered that many people have also been frauded by the same method. She said about the incident, “I am so stupid, I was deceived. I thought I was smart. I only understand the pain (of getting scammed) after being defrauded of money. I was so embarrassed that I didn’t dare to talk about it.”

Unfortunately, Yako had already lost over TWD 1 million (approximately RM149,430) when she realised she was scammed. She didn’t share how she recovered from her losses, but after the experience, she decided to study about investment. After doing her homework, Yako even invested in cryptocurrency.

While she did lose quite a substantial amount, it’s good that the experience led Yako to be smart about her money.
