You may have noticed that Malaysia is still in the monsoon season, and the pelting rains are typically expected to cease by March. This annual song and dance is what us Malaysians are accustomed to— the skies leaking.

Just yesterday, shoppers in Sunway Velocity Mall were surprised to find the skies leaking through the roof. While water and shopping usually don’t often mix well, but sometimes, you need a little drizzle here and there.

A video of the incident quickly made rounds on social media, sparking a wave of playful reactions from netizens. The water fell into an Akemi pillow store. Comparisons with various buildings and landmarks were made, with varying levels of savagery and criticism.

The incident seemed benign and any PR can be good PR, it is our civic duty as Malaysians to get what little joy we can out of this schadenfreude. Cue all the people comparing the mall to Changi Airport and Sunway Lagoon.

Naturally, the heavy rain also flooded the Caltex fuel station outside the mall. The neighboring road was also not spared from the water. Cars can be seen waiting through the water in traffic.

Netizen comments here pointed out the frequent flooding of this particular spot, calling for better managed draining and infrastructure. There were also a few Samaritans advising safe driving through the water.

(Update: 18th February)

Sunway Velocity Mall responded to us with the following statement:

“The leakage yesterday was due to an unusual downpour. Even the road near the mall was flooded. We have engaged our contractor to address the issue and rectify it. Hopefully, it will be ok now. It is the rainy season everyone, please take extra care and stay safe.”
