We’ve seen this scenario in movies and TV where the bride or groom would leave their partner at the alter while they run off with another lover. Did you know that you can actually sue your ex if they bail on you at the 11th hour?

A local lawyer recently shared some info on what can be done if your fiancé decides to cancel the wedding at the last second and here’s what you need to know:

Lawyer Gandhi Palanisamy, who regularly posts videos about Malaysian laws, revealed in a video on his TikTok channel that it is very possible for one to sue their fiancé for cancelling the wedding. However, it may not be as easy as filling up a form. The attorney shared that in order to bring a suit against their ex-lover, the case must fit certain criteria.

“Firstly, you have to make sure that there was a clear agreement from both parties that you were going to get married,” he said. An example of a clear agreement the legal practitioner provided was that if the couple already sent out wedding invitations to guests, that itself already further solidified that they had agreed to get married on that specific date and time.

He also added that people have the option to seek compensation for expenses related to becoming engaged and planning a wedding. Gandhi ended the video by stating that cases like these apply to everyone regardless of religion. The case can be brought to the Syariah Court for Muslims and the Civil Court for non-Muslims. “Remember, don’t easily make promises if you can’t keep them,” he said at the end of the video.

Most netizens thanked the lawyer for the useful information while others left questions regarding other related issues such as divorce, slander, and even regarding property. While the information he provided may be useful, one should always consult a lawyer who specialises in these specific cases.
