“Star Wars” Screenwriter Explains Rose Tico’s 76-Second Appearance In “The Rise Of Skywalker”

After playing a major role in “The Last Jedi”, the character Rose Tico played by Kelly Marie Tran, surprised many “Star Wars” fans with her role and limited screen time in the recently-released “The Rise Of Skywalker”.

It’s no secret that many fans weren’t too fond of the character when she was first introduced, but even her haters think that her lack of presence in the latest instalment was a bit harsh. Now with the aid of one of the film’s screenwriters, we may be able to understand why Tico’s screen time was only 76 seconds.

According to the screenwriter, Chris Terrio, the reason for the decision was to focus more on Carrie Fisher’s character, General Leia Organa. Terrio explained, “One of the reasons that Rose has a few less scenes than we would like her to have, has to do with the difficulty of using Carrie’s footage in the way we wanted to.”

The 42-year-old emphasised that, “We wanted Rose to be the anchor at the rebel base who was with Leia. We thought we couldn’t leave Leia at the base without any of the principals who we love, so Leia and Rose were working together.”

The screenwriter concluded that, “As the process evolved, a few scenes we’d written with Rose and Leia turned out to not meet the standard of photorealism that we’d hoped for. The last thing we were doing was deliberately trying to sideline Rose.”

Still, many viewers can’t help but feel that director J.J. Abrams was deliberately trying to sideline the work done by Rian Johnson in “The Last Jedi”. The actress has yet to give a comment about her character being sidelined.
