What To Expect From Star Wars Identities: The Exhibition In Singapore

by Vernon Maung
January 29, 2021

Star Wars Identities: The Exhibition is ending their last stop in Singapore from 30th January to 13th June 2021 as fans can get an up close and personal look with over a display of 200 artifacts found in the “Star Wars” universe at the ArtScience Museum. In other words for “Star Wars” nerds, these artifacts were discovered “in a galaxy far, far away“.

Furthermore, these 200 original items came from the extensive Lucas Museum of Narrative art archive for people to explore the science of identity through the “Star Wars” characters and embark on the same journey taken by the key main characters of the franchise, Luke and Anakin Skywalker.

Guests will go through a customised, interactive identity quest to obtain a new perception of the characters of “Star Wars” while finding out their own identities at the conclusion of the quest. This is aimed at allowing them to figure out a simple yet wise question: What force shapes you?

“Star Wars” geeks will go crazy in the otherworldly interactive exhibition with all the joy and excitement they will get seeing the real costumes, concepts, and props and of course, an interactive experience that will absorb anyone into the universe of the beloved franchise.

The creator of “Star Wars” himself, George Lucas has this to say about the exhibition, “Through the exploration of the characters and worlds of Star Wars, this interactive exhibition connects us with themes that can resonate with our own sense of self, familial identity and shared experience. In Singapore, the exhibition will engage that connection…fantasy meets reality, with a dash of reflection and adventure“.

General Manager of Pico Pro, Barnabas Chia exclaimed “We are very excited to be working with X3 Productions and ArtScience Museum to bring the exhibition to Singapore. ‘Star Wars’ has a strong following in this part of the world and we saw an opportunity for fans in this region to see the original ‘Star Wars’ artefacts before they are returned to the archives“.

Honor Harger, the Executive Director of ArtScience Museum, Marina Bay Sands also weighed in saying “Star Wars Identities uses original artwork from the epic space saga to explore human identity in an innovative way. As visitors embark on a voyage of discovery in the exhibition, we encourage them to ponder the motivation and forces that shape who we are as individuals“.

Based on the original “Star Wars” canon, ranging from the classic original trilogy (1977 – 1983) and prequel trilogy (1999-2005), the animated “Star Wars: The Clone Wars”, with the addition of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, the rich collection spans from all of the above. Such iconic characters that will make its presence known such as R2-D2, Darth Vader, Chewbacca, Yoda, Boba Fett, and even spaceships like the Millennium Falcon and many more. All of these will be put on display. Moreover, fans can witness highlights such as the creative process of filmmaking from storyboarding, concept drawings, model making, such as puppetry alongside costume design.

Star Wars Identities features a study of human identity divided into three major exhibition themes, including Origins, Influences, and Choices. 10 human identity components are explored within these three themes:

Origins

  • species
  • genes
  • parents
  • culture

Influences

  • mentors
  • friends
  • marking events

Choices

  • occupation
  • personality
  • values

All of these three components together create a backbone of the exhibition which explores the complex idea of identity both in reality and creative fiction. Original content all through the exhibition will clarify each of the components of identity. Additionally, “making-of” featurettes will be showcased at the exhibition as guests can experience the stories behind the creation of iconic characters from “Star Wars”, giving an explanation on how they became who they are, and manifesting how alternative creative choices could have made these characters different.

Also, here are some of the 10 things guests can look forward to at the “Star Wars Identities: The Exhibition” before going through the tour:

1. Interactive Checkpoints

Guests would be given a wristband at the beginning of the exhibition. It acts as a gateway to gaining knowledge about one’s true identity and a golden ticket to partake at various checkpoints. All the guests have to do is tap it alongside their choice and it will be recorded.

Each checkpoint is a formation of your identity, starting from picking what kind of species from “Star Wars” you are, the natural abilities you have, the planet of your birthplace, your personality, who your mentor is, your childhood, the culture you’re part of, your career, and also, whether you’re on the light or the dark side.

2. Stormtrooper costumes and bounty hunter Boba Fett

Every Stormtrooper design from “A New Hope” until “The Force Awakens” are all displayed under a gold light showing every single detail seen on their costumes. This includes the franchise’s famous bounty hunter, Boba Fett. Too bad there aren’t any Clone troopers though.

3. Han Solo carbonite

Witnessing one of the few iconic scenes in “Star Wars”, this carbonite of Han Solo is actually sculpted after the actor, Harrison Ford. Poor guy had to stick almost every part of his body to make the mould perfectly.

4. Original Concept Arts

Some of “Star Wars” best characters were all sketched on a piece of paper. One example is Yoda who looked like your typical garden gnome but ended up looking more iconic when altering the designs.

5. The prop of Jedi Master Yoda

We may have Baby Yoda (Grogu) but we all know that Yoda came first into the “Star Wars” universe where the world was in awe with such an amazing character. This is actually the real prop model used in the films.

6. The Millennium Falcon, TIE Fighter, Star Destroyer and other amazing spacecraft models

The most iconic moments in “Star Wars” are the space scenes. Doesn’t matter if it’s dogfight scenes or just ships traveling in outer space, it made us imagine how space-traveling would be like.

7. Audio stories and clips

Go into a display area and you’ll see a hanging bulb nearby it. Guests will hear an audio clip from specific scenes from underneath the bulb or a narration guiding them.

8. Everyone’s favourite Wookie, Chewbacca

Our beloved and friendly Wookie, Chewbacca will have the costume gentle furry creature displayed. You can also witness the original Chewbacca costume from “Revenge of the Sith”.

9. Jedis and lightsabers

Almost everyone who watches “Star Wars” would surely at one time wish to become such a powerful being, filled with a sense of loyalty, heroism, and discipline. A Jedi costume display also includes everyone’s favourite Jedi Master, Obi-Wan Kenobi.

10. Star Wars’ most iconic villain, Darth Vader

One of our main highlights is none other than the most iconic villain of all time, Darth Vader. His display resonates such a powerful evil presence, and even leaning closer, you can hear him breathing too, giving guests satisfying goosebumps. Such a menacing presence to behold.
