There’s no denying that people will make a competition out of anything. Even simple daily activities like eating and sleeping can be made into competitions. Well, here’s another one to add to the list.

Hin Market and Georgetown Festival will be hosting a Space Out Competition at Penang. As the name says, competitors are expected to “space out” to win. Of course, curious netizens wondered exactly what that would entail.

“If you have what it takes to be the best at doing absolutely nothing, join the first in Penang – Space Out Competition and win yourself a “One-Night Stay for TWO at Angsana Hotel, Teluk Bahang”,” the post reads. “Space Out Competition by Hin Market aims to encourage people to step back, relax and to take things one step at a time.”

The competition is slated to be held this Saturday (9th July) at Hin Bus Depot, Penang. With a participation fee of RM5, competitors will be signing up to space out for an hour. Unfortunately, the registration link has already been closed.

Nevertheless, it piqued netizens’ curiosity and they were quick to jump into the comment section. Several comments called out their friends who loved to daydream, claiming it would be an easy win for them. “Finally a competition specially designated for you guys,” one netizen teased, tagging their friends. Another read, “Just go sit there and zone out, sure can win.”

Others however wondered how the winner would be determined. One netizen even questioned what spacing out would entail with some asking if sleeping would disqualify them. A few got cheeky, like this netizen who asked, “Do you have a breathing competition too?” one asked. Another stated, “I think I can see a lot of crazy people at the venue, standing and sitting around dreaming and some maybe even humming to themselves.”

As strange as the competition sounds, it was actually created for a reason. South Korean visual artist Woops Yang felt that in such a busy world, slowing down and doing nothing was difficult. After all, people would feel anxious as they weren’t being productive. So, she created a space where people could zone out together.

Well, if you think you have what it takes, we suggest joining it next time. Who knows, you might just be able to slow down and find your inner zen.
