Song Kang On Reprising Cha Hyun-su In “Sweet Home” Season 2

If anything, viewers can expect a “dramatic transformation” (director Lee Eung-bok’s words, not ours) when Song Kang (송강), Lee Jin-uk, Lee Si-young, Ko Min-si, and Park Gyu-young reprise their respective characters in “Sweet Home” Season 2.

To recap, Hyun-su (Song Kang) previously fought against monsterization and was the only hope for Green Home residents, but is now alone after a series of events following his departure from Green Home. Eun-yu (Ko Min-si) becomes a warrior in this new season, persistently searching for her older brother after parting ways when leaving Green Home.

With shorter hair and military boots instead of ballet shoes, Eun-yu walks into the streets filled with monsters. Ji-su (Park Gyu-young) leads the Green Home survivors with a strong sense of responsibility. Sang-wook (Lee Jin-uk) finds his body overtaken by Eui-myeong, who believes that monsters are superior to humans. With this in mind, will these characters go their separate ways, go against each other, or unite?

When asked about returning to “Sweet Home” in his leading role, Song Kang replied, “I was very excited about working on Season 2 with so many more characters that will be played by incredibly experienced actors and reuniting with the other cast members who worked with me on Season 1.”

So where do we find Hyun-su this time around? “Director Lee told me that Hyun-su went through a phase of growing up in Season 1, and he envisioned Hyun-su as a more mature character in Season 2. With this in mind, I thought a lot about how to portray Hyun-su’s maturity in the second season. In order to show that Hyun-su is more mature now, I tried to focus on showing how he tries to serve others. I thought of various ideas while watching Season 1, where Hyun-su was like a little child. I tried to find the right tone of voice and behavioral traits to demonstrate that he is more mature in seasons 2 and 3,” the 29-year-old explained.

Obviously with Hyun-su leaving the Green Home, his situation changes. However Song Kang insists that “his emotions have remained the same. He has a great sense of justice, believing that he needs to protect everyone. But he is now more mature after having gone through so much, so I focused on adding depth to that sense of justice he feels. I assumed his emotions would have gained much more depth because of the amount of pain that he experienced after Season 1.”

In addition to his character growth, the South Korean actor also noted that the massive improvement in the quality of CGI effects. Catch Song Kang and the rest of the cast when “Sweet Home” Season 2 premieres on Netflix on 1st December.
