The Edward Snowden biopic was originally slated for release this Christmas. But now, we won’t be able to see it until next year as Open Road Films is moving its release date to 2016.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film has been pulled from its planned Christmas release date and out of the 2016 awards season race. The spokesperson for Open Road Films did not respond to request for comment, but sources said that “the film isn’t finished yet”.
Open Road has yet to decide the film’s new release date, but the move now gives more room to the Christmas Day frame. Other films that will be released this Christmas include “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip”, “Concussion” (starring Will Smith), “Daddy’s Home” (starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg), and “Joy and Point Break” (starring Jennifer Lawrence). This Christmas will also see the limited release of Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” and the new Leonardo DiCaprio drama “The Revenant” from Oscar winner Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu.
The movie, which is helmed by Academy Award-winning director Oliver Stone, is co-written by Stone himself and “The Homesman” scribe Kieran Fitzgerald. It is based on Luke Harding’s “The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man” and “Time of the Octopus” by Snowden’s Russian lawyer, Anatoly Kucherena.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is starring in it as Edward Snowden, an American computer professional who leaked classified information from the National Security Agency (NSA) to the mainstream media in June 2013. The movie will follow his journey from Hawaii to Hong Kong, where he met documentary filmmaker Laura Poitras and journalist Glenn Greenwald to hand over top-secret NSA documents, all before seeking asylum in Russia.
