Beloved local singer Shila Amzah (茜拉) found huge success in China after appearing in the popular singing competition “I Am A Singer (我是歌手)” in 2014. Despite her popularity on the show, the Malaysian singer’s videos are no longer on the broadcaster’s channel – and after much speculation, Shila has finally spoken up about the issue.
Recently, a XiaoHongShu user posted a video recording of Shila talking about her career in China. Previously, fans vouched for Shila’s appearance on 2024’s “I Am A Singer”, hoping to see the vocalist perform on the show again. However, the 34-year-old said she’s unsure whether she’ll have the opportunity to be on the programme, hinting at an issue with the production team. In the voice recording, Shila finally explained what happened, revealing that she got banned from Hunan TV, the broadcaster of “I Am A Singer”, for something that wasn’t her fault.
According to Shila, she was cheated by a former manager who allegedly discussed some contracts with Hunan TV but didn’t inform the 34-year-old about the schedules. The manager also supposedly received payment from Hunan TV without the singer’s knowledge. Shila failed to attend any of her schedules for Hunan TV because she wasn’t aware she had any, which led to the broadcaster banning her for supposedly violating her contract. Her scenes from “I Am A Singer 2014” were also deleted by the broadcasting company, which negatively affected her career.
Shila said she initially wanted to speak up about the topic when it first happened but couldn’t find the confidence to do so, adding that personal issues made the situation worse. However, the vocalist said she’s in a much better place now and is working towards rebuilding her career in China with a new manager. Shila also said she’s working on a new Chinese album and asked her fans in China to continue supporting her.
While it’s unsure whether Shila has worked out her issues with Hunan TV, we hope the singer can find more opportunities. We also look forward to seeing her flourish in China, Malaysia and the rest of the world.
