By now, you have probably seen the news and reactions to comedian Jocelyn Chia’s standup bit mocking the MH370 tragedy. While most of the public has since moved on, the authorities aren’t letting the comedian’s comments slide.

Recently, BERNAMA reported that the Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said an application will be filed with The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) to obtain Jocelyn’s identity and current location. He also said that the Malaysian Multimedia Communications Commission (MCMC) will also help investigate the social media accounts used by the comedian.

According to the IGP, the applications will help with investigations under Section 504/505(c) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Following news of the application, netizens have shared their opinion about the IGP’s statement, mostly in disagreement.

Many criticised the move, saying it’s unnecessary and a waste of resources. One Twitter user said, “This is so dumb. Why are we wasting time AND resources on someone so insignificant?” while another tweet writes, “A bad joke is not a crime. The public has responded and spoken up in disagreement. That is enough.”

Influencer Ceddy Ang also chimed in, saying the move may lead to more mockery by the comedian. Netizens also urged the police to instead focus on other cases like corruption or scams.

What do you think about the move? Do you agree with the netizens or is the PDRM doing the right thing?
