The Supreme Court of Korea has officially finalised a prison sentence of one and a half years for Seungri (승리). For those in the dark, the former BIGBANG member has been undergoing a series of investigations and trials over his involvement in the infamous Burning Sun Scandal.
Earlier this morning, it was reported that the court had turned down Seungri’s appeal for a lighter sentence. According to a report by KpopStarz, they also rejected the prosecution’s appeal for the sentence that was imposed to Seungri for the past crimes he committed.
In case you don’t know, Seungri was indicted for a total of nine criminal charges in January of 2020. Among the charges include mediating prostitution, overseas gambling, embezzlement, as well as threatening and assault. During his initial military court trial held in August last year, Seungri was sentenced to three years in prison. The “Strong Baby” singer was also fined KRW 1,156,900,000 won (~RM 4,011,479.10).
Seungri’s side was not too happy with the court’s ruling, and filed for an appeal. During his second trial in January this year, the High Military Court accepted the appeal and his sentence was reduced to 18 months, due to the former idol showing deep regret for his past actions.
The 32-year-old has been detained in military prison since the end of his initial trial. Following the court’s ruling, he will be transferred to a private prison, and will be released in February 2023.
