On New Year’s Eve (31st December 2024), there were multiple parties and musical festivals to ring in the New Year. One of those festivals was the Pinkfish Festival, held at Sunway Lagoon Surf Beach. The night was meant to be a fun and unforgettable experience for people, but sadly, it ended on a tragic note.

Photos and videos were circulating on social media of paramedics rushing to treat those who appeared to have lost consciousness during or after the event. It has now been confirmed that those concert attendees have passed away.

In an official statement from the Selangor Police Contingent, it was confirmed that a total of four concert attendees – two men and two women aged 20 to 40 – have died. It was reported that the four victims were immediately taken to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre’s emergency ward for further treatment the night of the incident.

However, the cause of all four deaths has yet to be determined. “Post-mortems were conducted [on 1st January], and the cause of death is still pending laboratory investigations,” said Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan. He added that the case is currently classified as a “sudden death report”, as there were no signs of external injuries on the victims’ bodies. However, they are not ruling out the possibility of any criminal element behind their deaths, such as poisoning.

According to a report by The Malaysian Reserve earlier today (Thursday, 2nd January), blood samples had been taken during the post-mortem process. “The sample has been sent to toxicology for investigation and we are currently waiting for the report to know whether the cause of death is related to poison or other cause,” Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan told the news outlet.

Four Sudden Deaths At Sunway Lagoon's Pinkfish Festival Caused By Ecstasy Overdose?

The identities of the deceased have yet to be confirmed. The Selangor Police have urged the public to come forward if they have any further information regarding the case. Neither the Pinkfish Festival organiser nor Sunway Group has issued a statement to address the incident.
