Seeing The World Through Johnny McGeorge’s Eyes

News alert!

Kuala Lumpur’s “favourite pervert” aka one of our city’s and our time’s most popular photographer just launched a Bedroom Party Series with Bedroom Pavilion KL last night. And lucky us, we managed to yank (kidding, we don’t yank) him away for awhile for an exclusive interview.

You ready to tap into the mind of Johnny McGeorge, the eye and mind and creative juice behind “Girls. And Money.“?

Hi Johnny. Tell us a little bit about your portfolio & what got you started with this style of photography.

“My messy portfolio…spans everything from top-down computer game concepts, magazine templates and brand strategies, to social media campaigns, editorial work, corporate copywriting, identity design, infographics, and of course this whole photography malarkey. My whole life I could never decide on anything so in the end I decided to try everything.”

“This style of photography came about as it was something that fit my technical understanding of the medium and also complemented my eye for catching a special moment. Timing is everything in my photography work. Well, that and composition. Not much else.”

We understand that the process might not be easy so how do you pick & choose your subjects? What do you look for?

“Initially I chose characters with unique faces. Not your typical commercial face and specifically non-models. I see the inherent beauty in every woman and wanted to portray that as an antithesis to the preconceived notion of beauty that most people subscribe to in the fashion or beauty industries. So my models must have attitude and personality first and foremost – because the beauty is already in them, it’s just up to us both to make them shine.”

On a flipside, tell us what you don’t look for in your subjects. As in, what are the straight up big “no no”s.

“Anybody who has really contrived ideas of what they want or what they think is beautiful. Usually it’s too obvious and becomes cliché.  So I look for the alternative beauty that people aren’t expecting. Anyone who approaches me and says I want it to look like Victoria Beckham or some supermodel is precisely what i want to avoid.”

To date, which of the personalities were the most fun to work with & why?

“Awww..difficult question as each girl has their own unique attributes. Everybody I work with is fun in their own right. There’s no prescribed method to how I work other than go with the flow and follow your instincts – so the fun comes through what both myself and model put into the situation. Cop out.”

You’ve released quite a number of photosets on your official Facebook page. What else can we expect from you in the near future?

“Expect the unexpected really. I try not to think too much about what’s gonna happen because you never know which way the wind blows. I’m an instinctive creature and I’m inspired by the unknown. If the feeling is right, I’ll follow my heart with any endeavor.”

What can we expect to see from “Girls. And Money. x Bedroom”?

“I try not to expect too much from anything. Expectations only lead to disappointment. If anything, I’m hoping people just come to network and enjoy themselves.  my core belief is that I’m a connector of people. I like to collaborate and showcase new talent. So for this engagement I’d like to bring together my own network and see how they can connect with each other to create new and interesting things. Specifically in Malaysia where creative niches exist independently of each other and small cliques never really mix.”

“I hope to somehow break those boundaries and meld creative circles from all disciplines in a way they wouldn’t have previously thought of. I just want everyone to come together and see that collaboration and collusion is the new ‘syok sendiri’!”
