Secret Invasion: Why Emilia Clarke’s Character Is The Next Nick Fury

It's curtains for the former director of S.H.I.E.L.D.

With the release of the official trailer for Marvel Studios’ “Secret Invasion”, we learn more exciting details about Nick Fury’s final mission to stop a deadly plot by the Skrulls. We’ve seen the race of shape-shifting aliens here and there within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Most of the time, they’re seen assuming the appearances and identities of other humans on Earth.

In “Spider-Man: Far From Home”, it was revealed that the versions of Nick Fury and Maria Hill Peter were interacting with were actually the Skrulls Talos and Soren. In the finale of “WandaVision”, we once again see a Skrull disguised as an FBI agent talking to Monica Rambeau. It kinda makes you wonder who else on Earth is secretly a Skrull. For the most part, they’ve worked together with humans like Fury and Captain Marvel to defend the planet from internal and external threats, all while Captain Marvel helps them to find a new planet to populate.

However, all that is about to change with “Secret Invasion”. With S.H.I.E.L.D. merely a shadow of its former glory and S.W.O.R.D. leaderless with Monica Rambeau joining the Marvels, Earth needs a new leader in the shadows to defend it from extraterrestrial threats. We believe Emilia Clarke’s character, G’iah will fill that role.

One Last Mission

For all intents and purposes, the marketing for the film strongly implies that the “Secret Invasion” miniseries will be the end of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. For the longest time, Fury has managed to maintain a friendly relationship with the Skrull refugees on Earth. Their homeworld, Skrullos, was destroyed by the Kree Empire sometime during the Kree-Skrull War. By the end of “Captain Marvel”, Carol Danvers promised to help the Skrulls find a new homeworld. In the meantime, some Skrulls stayed back on Earth to help the humans out. Their leader Talos is a good friend of Fury, Danvers and the Rambeaus. Even after the Blip and the events of “Avengers: Endgame”, Talos had still found a way to make Earth his new home.

That’s all about to change. Gravik, a leader of a radical group of Skrulls, have invaded Earth (secretly of course) and begun their plan to seize control of the planet. This probably means that Captain Marvel’s efforts to find the Skrulls a new homeworld aren’t working out too well so some of them have simply decided to conquer Earth. Now, the plot of the original “Secret Invasion” comic event involved the Skrulls coming in and replacing influential figures and key members of the superhero community on Earth. Pretty soon, everyone is paranoid and accusing others of being Skrulls. While we don’t think the scope of the series will be quite so ambitious, it’s still setting up some major changes for the MCU.

The world is now hunting Nick Fury through the manipulations of Gravik. In the trailer, we also see Talos’ daughter G’iah coming upon a large number of capsules with people inside them. This definitely fits with the Skrulls’ plan in the original storyline to keep certain individuals incapacitated while they impersonate them. We also hear from MI6 Agent Sonya Falsworth that there’s a secret history of conflict on Earth, implying that the Skrulls have been responsible for them, directly or indirectly.

With some help from friends like Everett Ross and Maria Hill, Fury must now find a way to defeat Gravik and the Skrulls. He allowed them a foothold on the planet so he’ll now have to bear the responsibility to save his world from them. It’s almost poetic the way his greatest act of kindness would come back to haunt him. Regardless, we’re fairly certain that this is the end for the former director. He’s already fake-died twice with “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home”. Three strikes, this time he’s in the ground.

A Skrull Spymaster

In “Captain Marvel”, we saw a much younger G’iah bonding with Monica Rambeau as her parents discuss with Captain Marvel and Fury on how to defeat the Kree. So we know G’iah grew up at least having at a somewhat positive perception of humans. In an interview with Vanity Fair though, Emilia Clark states that G’iah has grown bitter and angry about how her people have had to suffer through persecution and war, and that her character is not too fond of Fury or humans any longer. While it does make it out like G’iah will go the way of Karli Morgenthau, the trailer shows her still on speaking terms with Fury and possibly even helping him.

Seeing that it’s highly likely that Nick Fury and Talos will not survive “Secret Invasion”, we’re predicting here that Emilia Clarke’s G’iah will take up the mantle to become the new leader of a covert team of Skrulls and humans on Earth, possibly even taking integrating S.W.O.R.D. into the mix. Now some of you are probably wondering: what about Maria Hill? And yes, while she did hold a rather senior position as deputy director in S.H.I.E.L.D., that was a long time ago. Furthermore, S.H.I.E.L.D. is no longer relevant and she has held no rank within the S.W.O.R.D. which monitors alien and extra-dimensional threats to Earth.

Monica Rambeau will be busy hanging out with Kamala Khan and Carol Danvers in the upcoming “The Marvels” film so that leaves G’iah to be the one to pick up the pieces and do better where Nick Fury failed. The miniseries will probably end with Gravik being defeated and G’iah taking control of the Skrulls and working in the shadows to prevent discrimination against her people while also protecting her adoptive homeworld of Earth. Furthermore, she would make the perfect spy! A true ghost.

You can catch “Secret Invasion” on Disney+ on June 21st this year!
