For many Malaysians, roti canai is considered one of the cheaper food options available – but that’s not to say that all restaurants offer it at a low price. In a video posted on Twitter, a customer of a well-known mamak chain in Nu Sentral shared her order receipt for three pieces of roti canai.
However, surprising her – and netizens – was the fact that her small order cost her a total of RM10.20. According to the receipt, each piece of roti canai cost RM2.80 and included a packing charge of RM0.40 per piece plus a 6% service tax.

While the customer did attempt to hide the restaurant’s name, netizens were quick to discover that the restaurant in question was the popular Nasi Kandar chain, Original Penang Kayu Nasi Kandar. The chain is mostly known for Nasi Kandar, but they also serve other typical mamak fares like roti canai. However, the prices of the food are higher than your neighbourhood Mamak store.
After the video went viral, many netizens shared their reaction to the total bill, mostly in shock over the high cost of each piece of roti canai and the 40-cent packing fee. Several netizens did say the prices are, unfortunately, “normal” for the chain restaurant. However, some netizens did tag the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living (KPDN) to ask if such prices are reasonable.

Original Penang Kayu Nasi Kandar has yet to make any statement about the video – but what do you think about the prices? Is it justified because of the brand name? Or is RM2.80 for a plain roti canai too much?
