Alfonso Wong (王家禧), the creator of “Old Master Q” aka “Lao Fu Zi” (老夫子) comics, has passed away. He was 93 years old.
According to a statement released by OMQ ZMedia, the company that promotes and markets the comics, Wong died of organ failure on Sunday (1st January).
“‘Lao Fu Zi’ comics were Alfonso Wong’s life. He loved life. With his humorous style, he unfolded Lao Fu Zi’s story, accompanying generations of readers,” they said.
Born in Tianjin, China, Wong studied Western art at Fu Jen Catholic University. He moved to Hong Kong in 1956 and was the art editor for a Hong Kong Catholic magazine.
The Old Master Q comic was originally created by Alfonso Wong who used his eldest son’s name Wang Chak as his pseudonym. First published in Hong Kong in 1962, Old Master Q is one of the most popular Chinese comics around the world. The comic series follows Old Master Q, a slim man dressed in a yellow Chinese attire and his friends Big Potato, Mr. Chin, Mr. Chiu, and Miss Chan. “My life is like comic strips, and I do my best to make ‘Old Master Q’, that is myself, to play the fool and entertain readers,” said Wong.
