As time passes, the Japanese entertainment industry has mourned the loss of many influential figures who have left behind an enduring legacy. Renowned Japanese art director Shigemi Ikeda (池田繁美), celebrated for his work on numerous hit anime series, has sadly passed away at the age of 69. While the cause of death was not disclosed, Studio GONZO confirmed that he passed on 13th October 2024 (Sunday), with his family later announcing the news on 26th October 2024 (Saturday) through Shigemi’s Twitter account.
In the tweet, his family wrote, “This is Ikeda’s family. On 13th October, Ikeda passed away peacefully at the age of 69. We extend our gratitude to everyone who had a connection with him. Thank you very much. 1. Received a Primetime Emmy Award in 2009
One of Shigemi Ikeda’s most notable achievements was serving as the art director for the 2009 television film “Afro Samurai: Resurrection” (アフロサムライ レザレクション), a sequel to the original anime series with the same title. His exceptional work on the movie earned him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation, making it the first time this award was given for a Japanese-animated production.
2. He worked on all 7 seasons of “My Hero Academia” (僕のヒーローアカデミア)
The widely acclaimed superhero manga series “My Hero Academia” by Horikoshi Kōhei (堀越 耕平) owes much of its international success to its anime adaptation. Shigemi played a crucial role in the production, contributing to the visual designs for all seven seasons since its debut in 2016. While it’s not confirmed whether he was involved in the upcoming 8th season, this final season is set to premiere in 2025, marking the conclusion of the beloved series.
3. He established the art design studio Atelier Musa
Founded in 1986 by Shigemi, who served as its representative, Atelier Musa is a Tokyo-based art studio specialising in background art and design for anime productions. Known for its attention to detail and artistic excellence, Atelier Musa has played a significant role in shaping the visual aesthetics of many acclaimed anime shows, such as every major hit title in the Gundam franchise.
4. He worked on the first 2 seasons of “One-Punch Man” (ワンパンマン)
Another hit anime that he worked on as an art director was “One-Punch Man,” where he oversaw the visual direction for both seasons starting in 2015. The highly anticipated season 3 is set for release in 2025, although it remains unclear whether Shigemi was involved in the production.
5. He worked on the first 2 seasons of “My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU” (やはり俺の青春ラブコメはまちがっている)
Beyond action genre anime, Shigemi also brought his expertise to the slice-of-life series “My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU,” where he served as the art director for the first two seasons.
