Are There Really Only 16 Working Days In Malaysia For September 2017?

We know, we know.

We’ve just enjoyed an extended long weekend last week thanks to the Merdeka Day celebrations, Hari Raya Haji, and Malaysia’s 29th Kuala Lumpur Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) achievements. And with a couple more public holidays coming up this month, we can see where the confusion is coming from. But are there really only 16 working days in Malaysia for September 2017?

The above image, which states that there are more long weekends ahead for the month of September, has been heavily circulated on Facebook. According to its deduction, with a total of 14 days off for the month, there are only 16 work days. Unfortunately, it’s not entirely accurate, as it included replacement holidays that might not apply across-the-board.

For starters, it’s general knowledge that there are no replacement holidays for public holidays that fall on a Saturday. This means that the replacement holidays for Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V’s birthday (11th September, Monday to replace 9th September, Saturday) and Malaysia Day (18th September, Monday to replace 16th September, Saturday) don’t actually exist, unless if a company decides to do so. Replacement holidays for public holidays that fall on Saturdays are up to a company’s discretion, depending on said company’s policies.

As far as we know, for most companies in Malaysia, the public holidays for September 2017 are as follows:

  • 1st September, Friday: Hari Raya Haji
  • 4th September, Monday: 29th SEA Games Victory
  • 9th September, Saturday: Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V’s birthday
  • 16th September, Saturday: Malaysia Day
  • 22nd September, Friday: Awal Muharram

So there are really 18 working days in September. Sorry to burst your bubble, guys! But at least now you know.
