Mention Malaysia’s capital of Kuala Lumpur and you can easily list down some of the most crowded go-to places in the city. But what if someone were to ask for somewhere calm and quiet? Does KL even has a quiet side?

Despite the reputation, there are in fact several quiet locations within our hectic city that allows you to be free from loud noises, honking vehicles, and various other distractions vying for your attention. So whether you’re scouting for places where you can enjoy reading a book, soak in the scenery, and spend some alone time by yourself, we’ve found 8 peaceful locations for you to retreat to.

1. Perdana Botanical Garden

The wonder of being enveloped by well-maintained flora is a great escape for those who love flowers. Formerly known as Taman Tasik Perdana or Lake Gardens, the Perdana Botanical Garden is home to collections of indigenous tropical plants. Take a stroll through the garden and soak in the rich tranquil atmosphere of nature.

Tip: Remember to bring an ample supply of water when you visit.

2. Kuala Lumpur Bird Park

Besides the lush greenery, you can also enjoy a wonder world of birds – parrots, flamingos, hornbills, owls, and peacocks – in their natural habitat. There are plenty of hands-on activities such as bird feeding and the free-flight walk-in aviary to keep you occupied. Though not exactly quiet, especially when there are 200 different species of birds, visitors can enjoy a natural soundtrack from thousands of birds communicating in their own language.

3. Three Little Birds

Three Little Birds in D7 Sentul is the perfect spot to pick if you’re in Kuala Lumpur city. The space has the perfect combo of coffee and beautiful environment. It’s very zen with pebbled waters, wooden planks, and lushly greenery. Even if you’re not there for work, this breezy venue is perfect to enjoy a cuppa while soaking up a bit of Vitamin D with the absence of noise.

4. Kepong Metropolitan Park

Kepong Metropolitan Park is a public facility that often attracts kite enthusiasts because of its huge field. Colourful kites with various sizes can be seen up flying high during windy days and especially on weekends. Besides kite flying activities, visitors can also explore the viewing tower, playground, and reflexology facilities. Don’t worry, you can easily find a quiet spot to spend some alone time by yourself.

5. Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM)

Forest Research Institute or FRIM is a must for all nature lovers who want to go back to basics. Besides the well-known Canopy Walkway that takes you through a 200-metre long sisal bridge suspended 30 metres above ground, the Malaysian rainforest also has cycle trails, jungle trekking, and a cooling waterfall for you to have a picnic.

6. Thean Hou Buddhist Temple

The picturesque Thean Hou Temple is one of the oldest and largest temples in Southeast Asia. Located along Old Klang Road, the grand 6-tiered Buddhist temple is a architectural explosion of cultural elements and traditional designs. To avoid the bustle and chat in courtyard, climb up to the top patio and let the city fade away. Let it be just you, the soft breeze, and the distinctive city skyline.

7. KLCC Park

KLCC Park may not be your first choice when looking for a quiet spot, but you’ll be surprised that this urban sanctuary offers some tranquil spots to help dissipate the stress of city living. The popular park has a jogging track, excellent playground, and swimming pool for kids.

Despite the crowd, we still enjoy sitting idly while watching the eye-catching fountains that spray in front of Suria KLCC throughout the day and turns into the Lake Symphony fountains at night.

8. The Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur (JFKL) Library

If you love all things Japanese, then perhaps you’d like to pay the Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur (JFKL) library a visit. Its large collection has everything from Japanese art, Japanese culture, Japanese economics, history, and literature as well as magazines, comics, CDs, and DVDs. Fret not, there are also reading materials in English and Malay.
