Since her reign as Katniss Everdeen in “The Hunger Games” series is coming to an end, Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence is finally ready to prove that she is capable of doing much more than just acting.
The Hollywood A-lister was apparently bitten by the directing bug as she told Entertainment Weekly that she has signed on to helm “Project Delirium”, a dark comedy based on actual events.
Lawrence revealed her desire to become a director when speaking with EW for their “Entertainer of the Year” cover feature.
She said:
I have wanted to direct as long as I’ve wanted to act. I just don’t talk about it because I’d rather just do it.
She’s not lying at all, as she later told EW that she has signed on to direct “Project Delirium”. The movie is said to be based on an article about “mental warfare in the 60s, like an acid experiment gone terribly wrong”.
The article she’s referring to is the 2012 New Yorker article titled “Operation Delirium” by Raffi Khatchadourian. It focuses on a series of chemical warfare experiments conducted by Colonel James S. Ketchum at the Edgewood military facility in Maryland from 1960 to 1969.
The purpose was to evaluate the impact of low-dose chemical warfare agents on military personnel and to test protective clothing, pharmaceuticals, and vaccines. Over 7,000 volunteer US soldiers were tested with dangerous “incapacitating agents” including LSD, BZ and marijuana. However, most of the Edgewood test subjects were not checked in on in the following years for lasting mental damage caused by the experiments.
Regarding her intentions to direct, she said:
It’s funny, I’ve wanted to direct since I was 16 and always thought I should start making steps towards that. If I had tried to do it earlier, I wouldn’t have been ready. Now I actually feel ready.
Lawrence is currently filming sci-fi romance “Passengers” with Chris Pratt. She will reprise her role as Mystique in next summer’s “X-Men: Apocalypse” and continue her fruitful relationship with director David O. Russell in “Joy”. She has also projects for Darren Aronofsky and Steven Spielberg lined up.
