When it comes to cars, few can compare to the popularity of Perodua Myvi, especially with its many exploits, such as racing an AirAsia plane. This well-loved car has been holding the crown for the best selling car-model in Malaysia for a few years now.

But, it seems this year, the mighty Myvi has been dethroned from its spot by an unexpected competitor. That right, ladies and gents, this year, the title of best-selling car apparently was rewarded to another Perodua car, the Perodua Bezza!

17 years ago, in 2006, Perodua replaced Proton as the best-selling car brand in the country. However, notably enough, the Myvi only took hold of its crown in 2018. Still, it managed to maintain its position as the best-selling local car model for five consecutive years till 2022. At least, until now.

According to a new database website launched by the Malaysian Administrative Modernization and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU), as of 1st September 2023, Perodua has sold over 204, 229 vehicles. This has placed it firmly in the number one spot for the best-selling car brand in Malaysia, with Proton a step behind with 102,800 units. Third place was taken by Toyota with 83,086 registered cars.

For individual car models, although Perodua still held the top three spots, the Bezza outstripped the rest with 56,735 cars registered, while the Myvi had only 45,014 units and the Axia reportedly came in third with 44,722 cars. Although both the Perodua Alza and Ativa (23,390 units and 22,453 units respectively) were a spot below the Proton Saga (44,696 units), it still speaks volumes that the Perodua brand took five spots out of the top ten.

Well, it’s certainly easy to see which cars Malaysian love best and this year, its the Perodua Bezza. But, time will tell if the Bezza will retain its top spot, or if the Myvi will reclaim its throne. Who knows? Perhaps we’ll see another dark horse steal the crown soon.
