Things have quieted down since police remanded Malaysian singer Namewee (黄明志) over the death of Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh (谢侑芯). However, it seems that the authorities may look into extending the remand period.
On 9th November 2025 (Sunday), Dang Wangi district police chief Assistant Commissioner Sazalee Adam confirmed that the police are applying for a remand extension against Namewee once the current remand order expires. Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, was placed under a six-day remand on 5th November 2025 (Wednesday). He was scheduled to be released later today (Monday, 10th November 2025).

The remand extension is part of the investigation into Iris Hsieh’s death. The Taiwanese influencer was found dead in a bathtub of a hotel room in Kuala Lumpur late last month. The case was initially classified as a sudden death, but was later reclassified as murder. Namewee was also subsequently named a person of interest, as he was in the hotel room with Iris during the time of her death.
Amid the investigation of Iris’ death, Namewee is also facing charges of drug possession and drug use. During the hotel room search, police found several blue pills on the controversial media personality, which they suspect to be ecstasy. A drug test after his arrest also tested the 42-year-old positive for a cocktail of drugs. Namewee pleaded not guilty and was released on bail. The court has set his case for mention on 18th December 2025 (Thursday).

In the meantime, police revealed that Iris’ toxicology and post-mortem reports could take up to three months to complete, meaning the public is possibly looking at a months-long investigation. The authorities also haven’t disclosed whether there was any foul play. However, as of now, there are no other suspects or persons of interest in the murder case besides Namewee.
Meanwhile, Iris’ family and friends are calling for a transparent investigation, hoping that the truth of her untimely death will prevail. What are your thoughts on this?
