In a recent spate of unsettling events, the safety of football players in Malaysia has been thrust into the spotlight with incidents of Selangor FC midfielder Faisal Halim enduring a traumatic acid attack and Harimau Malaya’s Akhyar Rashid getting robbed. Unfortunately yesterday (Tuesday, 7th May 2024), national footballer, Safiq Rahim, encountered a harrowing experience when his car’s rear windshield was viciously smashed near the Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) training grounds.

The ordeal unfolded as Safiq navigated his Honda City along Jalan Skudai as he had a routine training session. Suddenly, his journey was disrupted when two unknown individuals on a motorcycle, proceeded to shatter his vehicle’s rear window before menacingly brandishing a hammer. He captioned it with, “I never expected that it was my turn to get attacked near JDT training grounds. Nowadays, we should stay vigilant.”

Upon the alarming escalation of such incidents, JDT Football Club’s CEO, Alistair Edwards expressed his concerns towards Safiq Rahim and Fasial Halim, denouncing such acts of violence as antithetical to the spirit of the sport. He urged authorities to conduct an immediate investigation as well as emphasising the implementation of enhanced security measures, urging football players to exercise caution at all times.

On the contrary, law enforcement has initiated investigations under Section 427 of the Penal Code, focusing on acts of mischief and vandalism. Raub Selamat, Johor Baru South police chief Assistant commissioner assured the public of ongoing efforts to apprehend the perpetrators, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

This matter struck a chord within the football community with netizens left perturbed, perceiving this chain of events as seemingly correlated. A few netizens pointed out how these attacks took place within a two-day gap timeframe, suggesting that there’s a pattern yet no official statements are announced to confirm this speculation. Some fans suggested that this may be a case of “copycat crime” where a single crime ‘inspires’ other criminals to do the same.

In light of the challenges, stakeholders across the spectrum must collaborate to safeguard the integrity of said sport and protect the welfare of its participants. What do you think?
