Indonesians Argue That Petronas Twin Towers Replica Isn’t Inspired By Malaysia’s Iconic Towers

The Petronas Twin Towers are a point of pride for any Malaysian. Known as the tallest twin towers in the world, these two resolute twins mark an iconic visage for anyone who visit Malaysia. As it turns out, Malaysians aren’t the only ones fascinated with twin towers.

Recently, netizens have been abuzz about a certain lookalike of the Petronas Twin Towers found in Aceh, Indonesia. While Malaysians are certain it’s a flattering replica of our own towers here, Indonesians reportedly alleged that it was inspired by something else instead!

Just last week, on 6th May, Facebook group ASEAN Skyline took to their socials to share some interesting facts about the supposed replica in Indonesia. “The twin tower is without a doubt so spectacular that its replica has been built in a whole other country,” they wrote. “The Petronas Twin Towers recently appeared in Lhok Seudu Beach, Aceh, Indonesia.”

Photos uploaded showed that while the towers aren’t as tall as the ones in Malaysia, they do have an uncanny resemblance to the twin towers here. Surprisingly enough, ASEAN Skyline added that some Indonesians denied that the replica was inspired by the Petronas Twin Towers. “Instead,” the group stated. “(They claim it’s inspired) from Candi Prambanan, also in Indonesia.”

Funnily enough, most Malaysians insisted that the replica is a “friendly gesture from Indonesians” and “a symbol of friendship between two countries“. This sentiment was also echoed in the comments. “Thank you so much Indonesia,” one comment read. “Such an honour.” Another said: “It’s proof Indonesia (looks up to) Malaysia. Malaysia is Indonesia’s idol.”

But, a few weren’t too happy with the imitation. “No authenticity and creativity,” one criticised, with another stating, “In 10 years, the statement will change (to) KLCC is Indonesia’s creation. Done claim.” Still, there were some who took the news with a sense of humour. One comment quipped, “All towers in this world belong to Indonesia.” Another joked about getting the chance to take a pic with the towers, as they missed the opportunity with the original.

Others were more concerned with Indonesians allegedly claiming the replica was inspired by Candi Prambanan. “Candi, they say? There’s a bridge…” a netizen pointed out with another asking Indonesians for an explanation about said bridge. One comment even read: “Don’t pretend, it’s just shaming Indonesia’s name. (We’ll) just be laughed at by Malaysians.”

Well, replicas of buildings aren’t exactly rare. As some netizens pointed out, there have been copies of other well-known structures, such as the Eiffel Tower. Still, regardless of its inspiration, it’s certainly a delight to see so many enjoying visiting the structure!
