Miss Universe Organisation is reportedly facing a tiny backlash after Miss Philippines won the title Miss Universe earlier this month.
The controversy started when several Australian newspapers claimed that titleholder Catriona Gray is not a pure Filipino as she was born in Australia.
Rumour has it that 16 countries have reportedly filed a petition to ban mixed-race contestants from entering the Miss Universe contest as they see it as an unfair advantage.
Some countries even asked that Miss Philippines be stripped of her crown.
According to Hop Clear, 8 of the 16 countries that filed the complaint are Asian. They include Thailand, Vietnam, Nepal, Indonesia, South Korea, Laos, Mongolia, and Nepal.
Mongolia wrote, “We want to bring the pureness of Mongolia in front of the world to see and this can only be achieved by one of our own pure-blooded contestants. It is an unfair disadvantage for us if other country uses half-breed and half-native contestants. The essence of Miss Universe will be tainted with uncertainty soon if we continue with this unfair practice.”
Meanwhile, Indonesia claimed, “We really think this is an insult not only to the organization but to the whole Asian region. The Philippines is the only country to use half-Filipina contestant in the last five years. There is no law that has been violated but it is ethically unacceptable.”
Miss Universe Organisation assures that Gray will not be losing her crown but they will look into the matter seriously.
“We are looking into this kind of possibilities and we respect all country-members. If there are multiple complaints then we have to take action. No final decision has been made so far,” Miss Universe chairwoman Paula Shugart commented.
