The heartbreaking week in Hollywood continues as renowned Canadian voice actor Peter Cullen, best known for voicing the legendary Autobot leader Optimus Prime in the Transformers franchise and Eeyore in Disney’s Winnie the Pooh, has passed away at the age of 85.
He died on Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles, a statement said.
“Peter Cullen passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family – and held in the hearts of his many friends and countless fans worldwide.
“His family asks that you honour his remarkable legacy by serving your communities and leading others with compassion, integrity, and loyalty and always remember ‘be strong enough to be gentle’.”
Cullen first debuted his iconic, deep-toned portrayal of Optimus Prime for the original Transformers animated television series in 1984. Over the decades, his commanding yet heroic vocal performance defined the character across generations, leading him to reprise the role in seven live-action Hollywood feature films spanning from 2007 through 2023, along with numerous animated spin-offs, video games, and media projects.
Throughout his distinguished career across voice acting and animation, Cullen received widespread industry recognition. His work as Optimus Prime earned him a Daytime Emmy Award nomination in 2011 for Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program. Later in his career, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023, celebrating his immense impact on popular culture and generations of fans worldwide.
